Abuja, Nigeria – In a move aimed at improving the welfare of Nigerian workers, President Bola Tinubu has approved a new minimum wage of N70,000. The President made the announcement during a meeting with leaders of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja on Thursday.
“We are committed to ensuring that our workers receive a fair and living wage,” President Tinubu said. “This new minimum wage is a testament to our dedication to improving the lives of Nigerians.”
The President also promised to review the national minimum wage law every three years to ensure that it remains relevant and effective. Additionally, he pledged to find ways to assist the private sector and sub-nationals in paying the minimum wage.
Labour leaders praised the President’s decision, describing it as a “fatherly gesture”. “We appreciate President Tinubu’s commitment to the welfare of Nigerian workers,” said TUC President, Festus Osifo. “This new minimum wage is a step in the right direction.”
President Tinubu also addressed the issue of unpaid salaries for university unions, promising to use his discretionary powers to meet their demands. “We will do everything possible to ensure that our university workers receive their rightful pay,” he assured.
This development is a significant milestone in the relationship between the government and labour unions in Nigeria, and is expected to have a positive impact on the lives of millions of workers across the country.
