Prince Harry has stepped away from Sentebale, the charity he co-founded nearly two decades ago to support young people affected by HIV and AIDS in southern Africa.
His decision follows internal tensions within the organisation’s leadership.
Founded in 2006 alongside Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, Sentebale has played a key role in supporting vulnerable youth in Lesotho and Botswana. However, the relationship between the charity’s trustees and its board chair, Sophie Chandauka, has reportedly deteriorated in recent months.
The dispute has led to a series of resignations, with Harry and Seeiso announcing their own departures in a joint statement. They described the situation as irreparable, expressing shock and sadness over the need to step away.
While the exact details of the internal conflict remain unclear, Chandauka has claimed she was targeted after raising concerns about the charity. Some trustees have also called for her resignation amid the ongoing rift.
Sentebale has yet to formally acknowledge the resignations but has confirmed its strategic shift toward broader youth health, wealth, and climate resilience initiatives in southern Africa.
Harry and Seeiso have stated that their resignation is an act of solidarity with the departing trustees. They expressed regret over the situation but affirmed their continued commitment to the charity’s mission.
