Nigerian House of Representatives has announced a high level consultation with the leadership of all registered political parties in Nigeria on the ongoing constitutional review.
The engagement is scheduled for Monday, October 6, 2025, in Abuja.
The meeting, convened by the House Committee on Constitution Review (HCCR), forms a critical part of the 10th Assembly’s broad-based stakeholder strategy. Its objective is to ensure the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) is inclusive and reflects a wide spectrum of national interests.
According to a press release issued on Sunday by the House Spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., the consultation will provide a strategic platform for political parties to contribute their institutional experience and perspectives. Leaders expected to participate include National Chairmen, National Secretaries, and National Women Leaders.
The agenda for the session is set to cover several pivotal national issues. Key areas for deliberation include the contentious matter of creating Special Seats for Women in legislative bodies, comprehensive Judicial and Electoral Reforms, and the possibility of Independent Candidacy. Other critical topics on the table are Local Government Autonomy, State Policing, and enhancements to Human Rights and Justice provisions.
Ahead of the meeting, the Chairman of the Constitution Review Committee, Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, emphasized the importance of the engagement. He described political parties as “the engine room of our democracy,” stating that their active participation is vital to achieving constitutional amendments that are “inclusive, credible, and reflective of the collective aspirations of Nigerians.”
To facilitate informed discussions, the Committee has prepared a summarised compendium of bills currently under consideration, which is available for download on its official website.
