Russian emergency teams are on their way to Iran after President Vladimir Putin ordered immediate help to deal with a large fire at Shahid Rajaee Port.
The Russian Embassy confirmed the action on Sunday after Iran requested assistance.
Aircraft carrying rescue specialists from Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations have been dispatched to support Iranian efforts to control the disaster. Officials from both countries are working together to try to save the port and protect lives.
The fire broke out on Saturday in the container dock area of Shahid Rajaee Port, located in Iran’s southern Hormozgan province. Local reports say extreme heat and flammable materials caused the fire to spread quickly after an initial explosion.
The blast and fire have caused heavy losses, with at least 25 people confirmed dead and over 1,100 others injured, according to Iranian sources. Emergency workers on the ground are battling tough conditions to bring the situation under control.
Shahid Rajaee Port sits near the city of Bandar Abbas by the Strait of Hormuz and plays a vital role in Iran’s trade. Damage to the port could have serious effects on the country’s economy and shipping activity in the region.
Iranian State TV reported that the fire remains a major concern, but the arrival of Russian teams is expected to strengthen the ongoing response and speed up efforts to contain the blaze.
