Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame met Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, on Friday where he expressed solidarity with the Gulf state following Israel’s attack on Doha.

Kagame also extended his condolences for the loss of lives during the attack, according to a statement from his office.

“Their discussions highlighted the need for accountability and the pursuit of a just resolution to the ongoing regional conflict,” the statement said.

Rwanda was among African nations that condemned Israel’s attack on Tuesday that targeted Hamas negotiators in Doha. Kigali had rebuked “hypocrisy and complacency” of the international community in the face of the escalating tensions in Middle East.

During Friday’s meeting in Doha, Kagame expressed appreciation for “Qatar’s vital role in mediation efforts across various conflicts, including in the Great Lakes Region.”

In March, the Qatar hosted President Kagame and his DR Congo counterpart Felix Tshisekedi for talks that later led to the signing of a historic peace deal between the two African countries in Washington.

Qatar is also hosting ongoing peace talks between DR Congo and the M23 rebels over the implementation of a ceasefire agreement signed in July, that aims at ending fighting that has devastated the DRC’s mineral-rich east.
