In a decisive move aimed at sanitizing the scrap trade across Kano State, the National Association of Scrap and Waste Dealers Employers of Nigeria (Northern Region) has officially banned all scrap-related activities in the state, effective Friday, July 5.
The announcement came through a press statement issued on Thursday by the Association’s Kano State spokesman, Salihu Ahmad, following a crucial meeting between the Association’s leadership and the Kano State Commissioner for Security and Home Affairs, Ibrahim Umaru, at the Government House.
“Effective from Friday, no more buying and selling of any scrap-related metal, copper, or any other material considered scrap. Also, no importation or exportation of any scrap-related materials into or out of Kano State. Defaulters will be severely penalized by the Association,” the statement warned.
The Association said the temporary ban will remain in place until all resolutions agreed upon with the state government are fully implemented. The move, it said, is aimed at reforming the scrap business and curbing illegal and unsafe practices within the industry.
This development is expected to impact hundreds of scrap dealers, transporters, and associated workers across the state. Stakeholders and security agencies have been placed on alert to ensure compliance.
The ban follows growing concerns over the security risks, environmental hazards, and criminal misuse of scrap operations in the state.
