The Nigerian Senate has announced the postponement of its plenary resumption, originally slated for January 28, to February 4, 2025. This decision was made to accommodate the ongoing budget defence sessions critical to finalizing the 2025 fiscal plan.
The Clerk of the Senate, Andrew Nwoba, disclosed the change in a statement titled “Change in Resumption Date” issued on Saturday in Abuja. He explained that the adjustment was necessary to ensure lawmakers have adequate time to scrutinize and deliberate on the budget proposals submitted by Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
The statement read: “Dear Distinguished Senators, please be informed that there is a change in the resumption date due to the ongoing budget defence. It has been rescheduled from Tuesday, 28th January 2025, to Tuesday, 4th February 2025, at 11:00 a.m. prompt. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.”
The delay highlights the Senate’s commitment to a comprehensive review process aimed at addressing Nigeria’s economic and developmental priorities. Budget defence sessions are a crucial part of the legislative process, during which lawmakers engage with government agencies to assess their financial requests and ensure alignment with national goals.
Similarly, the House of Representatives also confirmed a shift in its resumption date for the same reason. According to a statement by Akin Rotimi, spokesperson for the House, the leadership emphasized the importance of thorough budget engagements to achieve an inclusive and balanced national budget.
“The postponement is necessary to allow committees sufficient time to conclude ongoing budget engagements and defences with MDAs,” Rotimi noted.
Both chambers of the National Assembly aim to conclude their budgetary responsibilities promptly to ensure a smooth transition into the implementation phase for the 2025 fiscal year.
The 2025 budget has been a topic of interest as it is expected to address critical sectors, including infrastructure, security, education, and healthcare, while also implementing tax reforms to boost revenue. Lawmakers have reassured Nigerians of their dedication to a budget that reflects the needs and aspirations of the country.
The resumption of plenary on February 4 will provide an opportunity for lawmakers to deliberate on other pressing legislative matters, in addition to wrapping up the budget process.
