The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, Simon Bako Lalong, has refuted allegations that the National Council of Traditional Rulers (Establishment) Bill, 2024, seeks to designate the Sultan of Sokoto and the Ooni of Ife as permanent Chairman and Co-Chairman of the proposed Council.
“As sponsor of the Bill, I categorically state that these allegations are entirely false, misleading, and unfounded,” Senator Lalong said. “Nowhere in the text of the Bill is such a provision contained.”
The Bill provides for the appointment of a Chairman and two Vice Chairmen from among the members of the Council, representing different regions. Senator Lalong expressed perplexity over the deliberate misrepresentation of the Bill’s content, which he believes is an attempt to derail its progress. “The process remains open, inclusive, and in line with democratic principles,” he emphasised.
A public hearing will be held soon to allow citizens and stakeholders to provide input and contribute to the Bill’s refinement. Senator Lalong welcomed robust public interest in the Bill, urging individuals and groups to present their memoranda during the public hearing. “This inclusive engagement will help enrich the Bill and ensure it serves the best interest of the traditional institution and the nation at large,” he said.
Senator Lalong cautioned against spreading falsehoods and misinformation, emphasizing the importance of constructive dialogue in giving traditional institutions a constitutional role in promoting peace, unity, security, and national development.
By engaging in open and honest discussions, stakeholders can work together to create a Bill that benefits the nation. The Bill is currently with the Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Services, and Senator Lalong is committed to ensuring its progress.
