Setting The Record Straight: Muritala Ajaka’s Message Of Unity I SummitPost
By Hadi Dankogi
In the rapidly evolving landscape of the upcoming Kogi 2023 gubernatorial election, a misleading narrative in circulation has caught attention . This narrative erroneously suggests that the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate, Muritala Ajaka, referred to the people of Kogi Central, primarily inhabited by the Ebira-speaking community, as the common enemies of Kogi State. It’s imperative to clarify this misconception and set the record straight.
Unraveling the Misunderstanding:
In the midst of what seems to be the last-ditch effort by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to prop up an evidently unpopular ticket for the forthcoming gubernatorial election, a troubling rumor has emerged. Regrettably, this rumor has been echoed by individuals who are considered well-informed and prominent figures in Kogi’s political arena. The rumor revolves around a statement attributed to Muritala Ajaka, the SDP candidate, in a recent interview on Channels TV.
This rumor claims that Ajaka labeled the people of Kogi Central, particularly the Ebira-speaking community, as the common enemies of Kogi State. However, this notion represents a hasty generalization of the intended meaning behind Ajaka’s statement.
The Real Intention:
To set the record straight, Muritala Ajaka did not, and would not, categorize any ethnic group within Kogi State as common enemies. Ajaka is a responsible and astute son of Kogi State who holds respect for all its citizens. It is a great disservice to his character to assume that he lacks the sensitivity and intelligence to make such an offensive statement. Moreover, it is an affront to the values of unity and inclusivity that he advocates for.
Understanding the Context:
In the complex world of politics, propaganda often takes center stage. It is especially prevalent in a state like Kogi, where political orientation is often lacking, and collective unity remains elusive. However, it is our responsibility to correct and counter any narrative that threatens to further divide our state.
A Clarification of the Statement:
When Muritala Ajaka mentioned “common enemy” in his interview, it was not a reference to any specific ethnic or regional group within Kogi State. Instead, it was a critique of the system, one that has deviated from the promises of a “New Direction” and has failed to advance our collective interests. It is crucial to understand that this criticism is not based on the ethnicity of those in power but on their performance and the delivery of their promises to the people.

Moreover, when Ajaka expressed that Kogi West may not have the numerical advantage, he was referring to the registered voters and past election turnouts, not making a blanket statement about the entire region. This was an admission of a political reality, not an attack on any particular group.
The Complex Political Landscape:
As we approach the forthcoming gubernatorial election, it is evident that biases based on ethnic considerations are coming into play. The fact that the APC candidate hails from Kogi Central, coupled with the association of certain individuals with the shortcomings of the current administration, may lead to assumptions that the region is a stronghold for the APC. Consequently, advocating for the inclusion of Kogi Central in a broader voting plan to unseat the incumbent government may appear futile.
A Call for Unity:
In closing, it is essential to emphasize that the central message of Muritala Ajaka’s campaign is one of unity. His intention is to unify Kogi State as a whole, transcending the divisions of ethnicity and geography. The misunderstanding that has arisen should be rectified to avoid further divisions in our state.

As we navigate the complex waters of Kogi’s political landscape, let’s remember that unity is our greatest strength. Our shared destiny as Kogi citizens must take precedence over divisive narratives. Together, we can build a stronger and more united Kogi State, where the welfare and interests of every citizen are prioritized.
