Mexican authorities are investigating a deadly attack in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, where seven people were killed after a state prosecutor was targeted, in what is suspected to be a retaliatory act linked to organized crime.
The victims included close relatives of the prosecutor, sparking national outrage and drawing federal attention.
Preliminary findings suggest the violence may be tied to recent government actions against local criminal groups.
Last month, security forces seized more than 1.8 million liters of stolen fuel in a major operation. Officials believe this crackdown may have provoked the cartel response.
President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that her security cabinet is working closely with both state and federal prosecutors to ensure those responsible are found and brought to justice.
The incident has further fueled concerns about cartel control in key border regions.
Tamaulipas Governor Américo Villarreal expressed condolences to the prosecutor’s family and pledged full cooperation with national authorities.
He called for coordinated efforts to restore safety in the area, which has faced years of organized crime activity.
Reynosa, the most populated city in Tamaulipas with about 700,000 residents, sits across from Hidalgo, Texas, along the US-Mexico border.
The city is often affected by violent cartel conflicts due to its strategic location.
Security has since been tightened in the region, with increased patrols and investigations ongoing. Authorities aim to prevent further attacks as the search for those behind the killings continues.
