Six more people have been confirmed dead following the fire that engulfed Afriland Towers, a six-storey commercial building located on Broad Street, Lagos Island.
The victims were staff members of United Capital Plc, an investment and financial services company operating from the 3rd and 4th floors of the tower.
This development comes just hours after the Federal Inland Revenue Service confirmed the death of four of its staff in the same incident. The fire outbreak, which occurred on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, reportedly started in the inverter room in the basement around 1:30 p.m., quickly spreading smoke throughout the building and causing panic. Several occupants attempted to escape through windows while emergency responders worked to contain the blaze.
United Capital Plc has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of its employees, describing them as valuable members of the company. The firm announced that arrangements are being made for a memorial service in their honour while support is being provided to the bereaved families.
Emergency services earlier confirmed rescuing several people from the building, but witnesses and internal sources disclosed that not everyone survived. The fire is suspected to have been triggered by an inverter explosion, though officials are yet to release a full report or an official casualty figure.
Efforts to reach the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the National Emergency Management Agency, and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency for an update on the incident were unsuccessful as of press time.
