Social Workers Advocate Tolerance Among Nigerians

By Abiodun Azi

The Nigeria Association of Social Workers (NASoW), on Wednesday advocated tolerance among Nigerian communities, as well as promotion of intercultural understanding to achieve enduring change.

Ms Morayo Lamilisa, Chairperson, NASoW, Lagos chapter gave the charge at an event to mark the 2024 International Social Work Day, in Lagos.

The 2024 International Social Work Day theme is, “Buen Vivir: Shared Future for Transformative Change”.

Lamilisa explained that there was the need to promote intercultural understanding to build bridges of empathy, respect and cooperation across boundaries.

She stressed that the association was committed to promoting intercultural understanding for harmonious living.

“Together, let us commit to learning from one another, embracing diversity, and building a future where every voice is heard and valued

“Our diversity enriches our communities, workplaces, and societies. However, without a genuine understanding and appreciation of different cultures, misunderstandings and conflicts can arise”.

Lamilisa emphasised that the adoption of the 2024 theme was apt as the association sought to break down stereotypes, challenge prejudices, and celebrate the beauty of diversity.

“By embracing our differences, we can create a more inclusive and equitable world for all.”

She also said that social work as a discipline and profession, sought to achieve social stability and equality in every human society.

This, she said was by advocating social justice aimed at bringing succor to the vulnerable members in the society.

She also said that as part of NASoW commitment to the 2024 theme, the association celebrated women across the globe and remained in the frontline as women advocate for inclusion.

“We therefore, state our willingness to work with key Agencies tasked with the responsibility of protecting women and girls.

“The agencies are the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, National Emergency Management Agency, International Organisation on Migration and the Lagos State Government,” she said.

Lamilisa also called on all organisations and agencies in the human service profession to engage professionally trained Social Workers as service providers to ensure quality service delivery to humanity.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the day is commemorated every March 19, to draw public attention to Social Work profession and the practitioners, as well as social problems that require urgent attention.

This is with a view to ultimately take concrete steps to resolve identified problems across sectors. (NAN)
