Soldiers feared killed as terrorists attacked a military base in Benisheikh, Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State.
The attack, which occurred late Wednesday, targeted the 29 Task Force Brigade of Operation Hadin Kai.
Local sources said the insurgents stormed the base with weapons and operated for hours, setting parts of the facility, including military vehicles, on fire.
Chairman of Kaga Local Government Area, Zanna Ajimi, told journalists that the Brigade Commander, Brigadier-General O. Braimah, was among those killed.
He said, “Yes, we just left the military base now, and I can confirm to you that the brigade commander is among the casualties.”
A resident in the area, Musa Aji, also told journalists that shops around the military location were also set ablaze by the group.
He said, “They didn’t just burn military vehicles; shops that are by the roadside were also set on fire.”
He, however, said there were no confirmed civilian casualties as of the time of filing this report.
“As of this time, we have yet to hear about the death of any civilian. But, we heard, soldiers were killed,” he said.
Efforts to get official confirmation from the military were unsuccessful, as the spokesperson for Operation Hadin Kai, Lt. Col. Sanni Uba, did not respond to calls or messages.
The attack is the latest in a series of insurgent assaults on military formations in the North-East.
