Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing the Abia North Senatorial District, has firmly stated that the Deputy Speaker of the Federal House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Benjamin Kalu, cannot occupy both a leadership position and merely observe.
In an interview at his residence on Tuesday, Senator Kalu urged Benjamin Kalu to publicly announce his intentions if he wishes to contest the gubernatorial seat.
“I have advised my brother against running alongside Benjamin Kalu. If he wants to enter the race, he should declare his candidacy so we can strategise for victory. If not, he should return to contest his House of Representatives seat. He cannot be both a holder and a beholder; that is my position.”
Addressing his absence at an event hosted by the Deputy Speaker, Kalu denied any political rift between them, emphasising their close relationship while seeking clarity on Benjamin Kalu’s political aspirations.
“I am always in touch with him in Abuja; whenever he has the opportunity, he visits me. We have no issues. He just needs to clarify his intentions,” he remarked.
Regarding his recent meeting with Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, Kalu noted that Otti serves as a model for infrastructure development in Aba. He recalled his tenure as governor, where he aimed to enhance Aba’s resources for broader development.
“Aba and Enyimba City are recognised across Africa, which begins with ensuring safety. I established the Bakassi Boys to collaborate with law enforcement in securing the area, countering claims that we did nothing during my administration. I laid the groundwork for the development of Aba and Umuahia, including Ohambele.”
Kalu described his visit to Governor Otti as private, asserting his status as the longest-serving governor of Abia State. “My conversation with him centres on state matters. I am in the process of establishing five factories in Igbere, set to commence within a year, necessitating peace and unity in the region.”
“I am a dedicated member of the APC and am committed to energising the party. To suspend me, one would need to approach the NEC. We must work diligently to ensure APC’s success both locally and nationally. Politics isn’t merely about rallying crowds; genuine engagement matters. With 40 years of business experience and a proven track record, I focus on substance,” he concluded.
