A fan wearing a red “Make America Great Again” hat was escorted out of an MLS match at CITYPARK stadium in St. Louis after security officials said the political attire went against stadium policy.
The individual, Michael Weitzel, a known supporter of former President Donald Trump and a regular season-ticket holder, was asked to remove the hat but refused.
Video of the incident was shared online, showing stadium staff citing league rules prohibiting political statements or campaign material at matches.
The fan was told he could return to the game if he took off the Trump hat, but by the time he was offered reentry, he said it was too late to return.
The removal triggered online debate after Weitzel pointed out that Pride flags were visible around the venue.
Stadium representatives responded that such displays were previously approved, while attire directly linked to political campaigns, including those involving Trump, was not allowed.
MLS rules aim to maintain a neutral environment and prohibit fans from displaying political slogans or gear that may provoke disruption or conflict.
St. Louis City SC has not issued a statement regarding the event. The incident continues to spark debate over the balance between league rules, political expression, and what is considered acceptable at sports events.
