On the morning of July 24, President Lai Ching-te welcomed a visiting delegation from the Republic of Somaliland led by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Abdirahman Dahir Adam.
This visit marked a new step in the growing relationship between Taiwan and Somaliland, now in its fifth year since both sides opened representative offices.
President Lai expressed gratitude to Somaliland for its continued support and friendship.
He also acknowledged former representative Mohamed Omar Hagi Mohamoud, who now plays a key advisory role in maintaining close ties.
The president noted that cooperation between the two partners has led to progress in many areas, including technology, education, and governance.
A key moment of the visit will be the signing of a new agreement focusing on coast guard cooperation.
This move reflects shared interests in maritime safety and economic development.
Taiwan hopes to support Somaliland’s goals in areas such as ocean security and the blue economy, and both sides aim to create more joint projects in the future.
President Lai also mentioned that Taiwan seeks to work together with like-minded countries such as the United States, aiming for broader cooperation that supports peaceful development along Somaliland’s coast.
In his remarks, Minister Adam expressed appreciation for Taiwan’s hospitality and described the island as a peaceful and democratic partner.
He stated that Taiwan and Somaliland both face outside pressure, but he stressed that their relationship remains firm.
He pointed out that Somaliland is open to Taiwanese investment and believes the two sides can work together in many fields.
He welcomed the upcoming maritime agreement and said that he looked forward to stronger ties in the years ahead.
The delegation was accompanied by Somaliland’s Representative to Taiwan, Mahmoud Adam Jama Galaal, during the visit to thePresidential Office.
