Taiwan is strengthening its ties with Israel, citing Israel’s unwavering support amidst global criticism of its actions in Gaza. Taiwan’s Foreign Minister, Lin Chia-lung, emphasized that Israel has shown more support than any other Middle East country, particularly in international organizations.
“We’ll be friendly to countries that are friendly to us,” Lin said, highlighting Israel’s declaration signed by 72 parliament members calling for Taiwan’s inclusion in major international organizations. In contrast, Lin criticized Palestine for siding with China’s “One-China” principle, stating, “Palestine is very bad to Taiwan.”
Taiwan’s stance is rooted in shared democratic values and a common struggle for freedom. Lin emphasized humanitarian aid to both Israelis and Palestinians, including Gaza, while avoiding direct comment on a planned donation to a West Bank medical center.
This move underscores Taiwan’s strategic diplomacy, leveraging relationships with like-minded nations to counterbalance China’s influence. Israel’s support for Taiwan is notable, given Palestine’s backing of Beijing’s “One-China” policy.
