Taraba’s Debt Profile from ₦237 Billion in 2023 to over ₦1 trillion is Alarming – Bwacha

By Emmanuel Awari-Jalingo

A Governorship aspirant under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party PDP, Senator Emmanuel Bwacha has describe Taraba’s high debt profile from ₦237 billion in 2023 to over ₦1 trillion as alarming, describing the scenario as unsustainable.

He disclose this while making declaration at Shield Hotel in Jalingo, vowing to end fiscal irresponsibility and broken promises plaguing the state.

Bwacha underscored the pressing necessity for transparency, prudent management of public resources, and a thorough audit of the state’s financial situation.

He asserted that the citizens of Taraba are entitled to clear explanations and responsible leadership that emphasizes development, stability, and economic recovery.

Sen. Emmanuel Bwacha said his 2023 electoral setback was influenced by religious dynamics and limited consultation within his party.

According to him, the Christian bloc rallied behind Agbu Kefas, while Muslim stakeholders backed a different candidate, leaving him politically caught between both sides. He added that his late entry into the party also hindered broad consultations at the time.

Bwacha, however, stated that those challenges have now been addressed, noting that consultations have been strengthened and party structures better aligned ahead of future contests.

“Governance has become self-service, not public service,” he declared, citing collapsed infrastructure, worsening poverty, and scandals without consequences.

The senator pledged a radical shift, promising to prioritize agriculture value chains, digital economy investments, and healthcare reforms.

“We’ll build roads that connect communities, not just government offices,” he said, dismissing past projects as cosmetic. His plan includes teacher welfare upgrades, youth-focused sports hubs, and civil service reforms to restore dignity.

Senator Emmanuel Bwacha alleged that unknown individuals sent to assassinate him were recently apprehended and that 15 suspects are now in custody and will face the full rought of the law.

Bwacha, who narrowly lost the 2023 election, framed his campaign as a “moral duty,” quoting Edmund Burke: “Silence in the face of evil is complicity.”
He rejected ethnic or religious divisions, urging unity to rebuild trust.

Senator Bwacha pointed out that the state is witnessing failing infrastructure, overburdened, underfunded education system, excessive borrowing without accountability and Governance that prioritizes luxury over service.

“These actions betray the very purpose of government. They destroy the bond between leadership and the people. What we see is governance driven by self, not service.

“Today, governance has drifted away from the people. Public service has been replaced with self-serving interests, Poverty has worsened, Infrastructure has decayed, Insecurity has spread across our communities. Agriculture has weakened, Scandals have become frequent. This is not the Taraba we deserve.

“I therefore declare my resolve to lead Taraba into a new era an era of transparency, unity, and real progress – he said.

The declaration, met with chants of Sai Bwacha, sets the stage for a high-stakes rematch against incumbent Governor Agbu Kefas.
