There was a mix of disbelief and compassion in Wamba, Nasarawa State, on Sunday, as residents rallied to save the life of a newborn baby boy abandoned in the Small London area of the community.
The infant, wrapped in pieces of cloth and left helpless, was discovered by passersby in the early hours of the morning. According to witnesses, the baby was heard crying faintly, drawing the attention of residents who rushed to the scene.
The Adon Garin Wamba, Mohammed Zaharadeen, confirmed the incident in a statement, describing the rescue as an act of humanity that reflects the community’s values. He said the baby was immediately taken into safe custody and handed over to relevant authorities for urgent medical care.
“Residents did not hesitate for a moment. They came together to save a life. Their action should remind us of our shared responsibility to protect the vulnerable,” he said.
Community members who gathered at the scene expressed deep sadness at the thought of a child being abandoned at birth, while also thanking God that the infant was found alive.
Healthcare personnel have begun providing medical attention to ensure the baby’s stability and wellbeing.
Many residents are now calling for thorough investigations to uncover the circumstances behind the abandonment and to ensure justice for the child.
