Heavily armed militants on Tuesday morning attacked Djibo, the capital of Soum Province in northern Burkina Faso.
The assault began at around 6:30 a.m. with gunfire and explosions reported as security forces fought back.
As of 9:30 a.m., the situation was still unfolding, with no clear information about casualties or damages.
Around 9:20 a.m., another attack occurred in Gorgadji, a town in Séno Province.
Details about the number of victims and the damage caused are not yet available.
Djibo has been under threat from jihadist groups since 2022, causing ongoing humanitarian issues, while Gorgadji has also experienced previous deadly attacks, including one in 2021 that killed more than 80 people.
Security forces are on the ground in both locations, working to defend the areas and restore calm.
