Authorities in Iran have carried out the execution of three men convicted of rape in the northern city of Gorgan.
The executions took place at dawn inside the city’s main prison, according to a report published by the judiciary’s news website, Mizan Online.
Local judicial officials stated that the men were part of a group responsible for assaulting three women.
Their arrests followed soon after the victims came forward to report the crimes.
No further details regarding the case or the identities of the victims and convicts were released.
In Iran, rape and murder are crimes punishable by death.
The country continues to apply the death penalty more than almost any other nation, ranking second globally after China, as noted by several international human rights organizations, including Amnesty International.
While executions are usually carried out within prison grounds, there have been exceptions.
Earlier this month, a man was hanged in public in Iran’s northwest region after being found guilty of raping and killing a young girl.
That case had drawn widespread attention across the country.
Iran’s criminal justice system allows capital punishment for various serious offenses, with many executions being held at dawn by hanging.
Reports of such cases continue to appear regularly, raising ongoing discussions about the use of the death penalty in the country.
