President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Professor Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu as the new Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).
The appointment takes effect from August 18, 2025, following the completion of the tenure of the outgoing CMD, Professor Darlington Obaseki.
Professor Ize-Iyamu is a distinguished academic, clinician, and administrator with over 27 years of experience at UBTH. She joined the hospital in 1997 as a Junior Registrar and became an Honorary Consultant in 2005. She has also served as Head of Department for over a decade, earning recognition for her integrity, institutional knowledge, and results-driven leadership.
As Dean of the School of Dentistry at the University of Benin, Professor Ize-Iyamu has attracted partnerships, improved infrastructure, and advanced staff and student welfare. Her expertise and vision are expected to elevate the standards of dental education and practice in the country.
With over 55 publications in reputable journals, Professor Ize-Iyamu is noted for her contributions to evidence-based health policy and research. Her appointment as CMD of UBTH is expected to usher in a new phase of transformative healthcare delivery at the hospital, with plans to modernize facilities, expand specialist services, strengthen institutional accountability, and prioritize technology-driven solutions and community outreach ¹ ².
