President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Lieutenant General Jeremiah Timbut Useni (rtd.), a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and renowned military officer, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 81.
In a statement released on Friday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Bayo Onanuga, the President described the late General as a man of remarkable courage and unwavering dedication throughout his illustrious military career. Tinubu also commended Useni’s contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly in his roles as the former Governor of the old Bendel State, Minister of Transport, and Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army.
“General Useni was an inspiration to many young officers, encouraging them to prioritize national interests above personal gain. His commitment to the nation’s development, both in uniform and in public service, leaves an enduring legacy,” the statement read.
The President extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Plateau State, where Useni hailed from, as well as to his family, friends, and military colleagues. Useni’s political career included serving as Deputy National Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and as a Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District. He was widely respected for his dedication to governance and his efforts to bring development to his constituency.
President Tinubu also prayed for God to grant the late General eternal rest and provide solace to his family and loved ones during this period of mourning.
