The President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed removal of five percent tax imposed on telecommunications services in Nigeria to ease cost of calls, and internet connectivity in the country.
This was disclosed on X (formerly Twitter) by Aminu Maida, the executive chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) that the president ordered removal of the tax during discussions on the recent act.
“The development is expected to bring relief to over 171 million active telecom users across the country, many of whom have faced a 50 percent tariff increase implemented earlier this year” , he said.
In January, 2025, Nigerians reacted over 50 per cent in increase in calls and data connectivity approved by Nigerian Communications Commission.
The decision came as the sector faces mounting financial losses, exacerbated by the devaluation of naira and increasing operational challenges.
