The Togolese Navy participated in the 2025 edition of the Grand African Nemo exercise at the Maritime Prefecture in Lomé, Togo.
This annual event, organized from November 10 to 14 by the French Navy in collaboration with the Gulf of Guinea countries, aims to strengthen regional cooperation and crisis response capabilities at sea.
According to Penn Laré, Chief of Staff of the High Council for the Sea, “This exercise demonstrates our commitment to building a safer maritime environment through enhanced cooperation and the engagement of all stakeholders involved in maritime affairs.”
Over five days, according to a publication by the Togolese Ministry of Defense, nearly 120 personnel, patrol boats, fast attack craft, command vessels, an Air Force aircraft, and a tanker participated in three main scenarios: search and rescue at sea, pollution control, and interceptions related to illegal fishing, arms trafficking, and drug trafficking.
Faced with the rise in piracy and illicit trafficking in the Gulf of Guinea, Togo has, for several years, established a robust institutional framework through the National Organization for State Action at Sea (ONAEM), which combines the High Council for the Sea and the Maritime Prefecture.
