The Lagos State Government has ordered the closure of Smiley Kids Montessori School in Sangotedo following the tragic death of a 2-year-old pupil, Rapheala Ogbodo.
The school, located within Heritage Place Estate, was sealed on Saturday, January 18, after allegations of negligence surrounding the toddler’s death. Rapheala reportedly drowned in the school’s swimming pool on January 15, sparking outrage and calls for justice on social media.
In a statement posted on X, the Lagos State Safety Commission confirmed that the facility has been closed to enable a thorough investigation. Officials from the commission and the Office of Education Quality Assurance visited the school to conduct a preliminary probe.
“The safety of children is our top priority. This investigation will identify any lapses that may have contributed to this heartbreaking incident,” said Lanre Mojola, Director-General of the Lagos State Safety Commission.
The government also extended condolences to the bereaved family and promised to implement measures to prevent similar occurrences.
The incident came to light after a distraught mother, identified as Ella, shared her ordeal online, accusing the school of foul play. According to Ella, her daughter left home healthy but was later returned lifeless, with the school claiming she had drowned.
Public anger has mounted, with many questioning the school’s safety protocols. Mojola assured the public that findings from the investigation would be disclosed and appropriate actions taken.
This tragedy has reignited conversations about child safety in schools across Nigeria, with advocates calling for stricter regulations and accountability.
