Tribute To A Virtuous Matriarch: Mama Victoria ElegwoAjefu (MAMA IYE EJA)

By Omonu YG Nelson

The passing of Mama Victoria Elegbo Ajefu, fondly known as Mama Iye Eja, has left an unfillable void in the lives of many.

The 69-year-old matriarch, who transitioned on June 2, 2024, was a shining example of kindness, generosity, and resilience.

“Mama Iye Eja was a pillar of strength and hope to countless individuals. Her impact on our community and beyond is immeasurable. Until her last breath, she was a devoted Catholic, worshipping at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Nyanya Karu, Abuja, where she was a devoted member and women leader. “Her generosity and selflessness inspired many, and her legacy will continue to live on through the countless lives she touched.”

As a market women leader, Mama Iye Eja was a force to be reckoned with. Her entrepreneurial spirit and business acumen earned her the nickname “Fish Magnet.” Yet, despite her success, she remained humble and kind, always willing to lend a helping hand.

“Mama Iye Eja was more than just a mother to me,” said Mrs. Uche Ugwoji, one of the many individuals she supported and mentored. “She took me under her wing, trained me, and instilled in me the values of hard work and compassion. I owe my success to her guidance and support.”

Mama Iye Eja’s kindness and generosity extended beyond her immediate family. She took in and trained many children, some of whom were not her biological children. Her home was a haven for those in need, and her door was always open to those seeking refuge.

“Though she had little or no education, Mama Iye Eja’s wisdom and business acumen were unparalleled,” said Mr. Romanus Ajefu, her son. “She was a true matriarch, and her passing has left a gaping hole in our lives. We take comfort in the knowledge that her gentle soul rests in perfect peace.”

As the community bids farewell to this extraordinary woman, her legacy lives on through the countless lives she touched.

Mama Victoria Elegbo Ajefu was married to Boniface Ajefu of Ejegbo, Ankpa local government, who died a few years ago.

May her gentle soul indeed rest in perfect peace. Amen.
