Troops of the Joint Task Force, North East Operation HADIN KAI, have killed eight fighters of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) during an operation in Borno State.
The clash happened on Monday morning when soldiers were ambushed near Garin Giwa along the Baga–Cross Kauwa supply route. The insurgents attempted to disrupt military movement in the area but were overpowered in the encounter.
Among those killed were two field commanders known as Munzirs and another senior fighter identified as a Qaid. Security sources said one of the slain commanders was Modu Dogo Munzir from Dogon Chukun, while another, Abu Aisha, was traced to Tumbun Mota.
During the battle, several other ISWAP members escaped with gunshot wounds. In their retreat, they left behind 14 motorcycles which were recovered by the troops. The loss of the motorcycles is seen as a blow to the insurgents’ mobility and logistics in the region.
The army has restated its determination to clear out terrorist groups from the North East and ensure peace is restored to communities that have been affected by years of violence. Military authorities have also praised the troops for their effort in the ongoing operations.
