U.S. President Donald Trump has voiced strong opposition to recent statements by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who suggested replacing Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky with a transitional government.
Trump believes such remarks could disrupt ceasefire negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
During an interview with NBC News, Trump expressed frustration over Putin’s comments, arguing that questioning Zelensky’s leadership could delay any potential peace agreement. He warned that if negotiations failed and Russia was found responsible, he would impose strict tariffs on Russian oil exports.
Trump outlined his plan for tariffs ranging from 25% to 50%, targeting all Russian oil shipments. The restrictions would also prevent any country purchasing Russian oil from conducting business in the United States. He stated that these measures would take effect within a month if no ceasefire agreement was reached.
His latest remarks add to earlier criticisms of Zelensky, whom Trump previously referred to as a “dictator,” questioning his leadership and approval ratings in Ukraine. This stance has drawn mixed reactions, especially as the conflict in Ukraine continues.
Moscow has yet to respond to Trump’s statements. However, he hinted at an upcoming conversation with Putin later in the week, suggesting that further diplomatic discussions may take place soon.
