Following the deadly attack at a Manhattan skyscraper that left four people dead and one critically injured, more details have emerged about the gunman and his possible motives — alongside growing reactions from political leaders.
The shooter, identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura of Las Vegas, was a former American football player who had reportedly battled mental health issues for years.
Investigators believe Tamura’s actions may be linked to his history with contact sports.
A note recovered from his possession referenced CTE, a brain condition often linked to repeated head trauma, sparking concern that he may have blamed the National Football League (NFL) for his health and personal decline.
The attack occurred inside 345 Park Avenue, where the NFL headquarters is located. Officials now believe Tamura drove across several states with a rifle, body armor, and ammunition, possibly targeting the league.
However, due to a mistake in navigating the building, he may have reached the wrong offices before carrying out the shooting.
In the aftermath, President Donald Trump issued a strong statement, calling the gunman a “crazed lunatic” and focusing on the mental health aspects of the tragedy.
Speaking from Scotland, Trump said he had been fully briefed and expressed sorrow for the families affected.
However, he stopped short of addressing broader issues related to gun access, instead saying that mental illness continues to be the driving force behind such incidents.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams took a different stance, pointing to what he described as the country’s ongoing struggle with gun availability.
He warned that tragedies like this will continue unless national firearm policies are addressed.
The NYPD confirmed that Officer Didarul Islam, who was off duty at the time, died heroically while trying to assist others.
Originally from Bangladesh, Islam is survived by his pregnant wife and two young sons.
Federal agents and city police are now tracking Tamura’s travel route, his mental health history, and any prior interactions with NFL institutions.
Authorities have confirmed he acted alone and that no further threat remains.
