Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has formally nominated U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, during a dinner at the White House, where Netanyahu handed Trump a written nomination letter in person.
Trump responded warmly to the gesture, noting the importance of the nomination coming from Netanyahu.
The Israeli leader praised Trump’s recent foreign policy moves, describing them as steps toward lasting peace in the Middle East.
He said that under Trump’s leadership, peace was taking shape across countries and regions.
According to the Nobel Committee, the peace prize is awarded to individuals or organizations that contribute to peace between nations, reduce military conflict, or promote peaceful gatherings and negotiations.
Trump has claimed credit for halting last month’s brief military clash between Iran and Israel, which lasted 12 days.
He had announced on his social media platform, Truth Social, that U.S. strikes had targeted and destroyed Iran’s alleged nuclear weapons facilities, leading to a ceasefire that remains in effect.
Following those developments, Trump said on Monday that Iran had shown interest in restarting talks with the United States.
While Iran has not officially confirmed this, its President, Masoud Pezeshkian, said in a U.S. television interview that dialogue with Washington is possible.
He also stated that Iran may be ready to return to cooperation with the United Nations nuclear agency.
However, Pezeshkian added that full access to Iran’s nuclear sites is not yet available, owing to the damage caused by recent U.S. airstrikes.
