U.S. President Donald Trump has nominated Brent Christensen, a career diplomat and member of the Senior Foreign Service, as the next U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh.
The nomination was announced on September 3, 2025, and Christensen now awaits Senate confirmation before he can officially assume the post.
Christensen, of Virginia, has significant experience in South Asia, particularly Bangladesh.
He previously served as Counselor for Political and Economic Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka between 2019 and 2021, and has held the role of Bangladesh Country Officer at the State Department.
Observers note that his repeated postings to Bangladesh reflect his close professional alignment with President Trump.
The ambassadorial role will involve managing U.S. relations with Bangladesh amid political uncertainties, as the country prepares for national elections in February 2026 under an interim administration led by Chief Adviser Prof. Mohammed Yunus.
Christensen’s prior experience in the country is expected to help navigate diplomatic challenges, including trade, security cooperation, and regional geopolitical issues.
The White House formally described him as “Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the People’s Republic of Bangladesh,” emphasizing the seniority of the role.
However, the nomination is not yet an official appointment, which will only occur once the Senate confirms him.
Christensen’s selection is expected to strengthen U.S.-Bangladesh ties and provide continuity in Washington’s diplomatic engagement with Dhaka.
His familiarity with local political and economic affairs positions him to address both bilateral concerns and broader regional challenges in South Asia.
