Trump Urges Americans to Return to Religion at National Prayer Breakfast
President Trump urged Americans to return to religion during the National Prayer Breakfast, reflecting on his own deepened faith after a near-assassination attempt. “I really believe you can’t be happy without religion,” he said. “Without that belief, I really believe it — I just don’t see how you can. So, let’s bring religion back. Let’s bring God back into our lives.”
Trump’s comments were more personal and conciliatory than usual, as he expressed his longing for bipartisan cooperation and unity. “If we could ever come together, it would be unbelievable. May not happen, but it should, and maybe it will,” he said.
The president also referenced the country’s founding on religious principles, stating, “From the earliest days of our republic, faith in God has always been the ultimate source of the strength that beats in the hearts of our nation.”
Trump announced plans for a “National Garden of American Heroes,” a historic site in Washington, D.C., to honour American heroes. He also acknowledged the impact of COVID-19 on religion, saying, “We’re very hurt by what COVID did to religion. It really hurt, badly.”
The event was attended by legislators from both parties, and Trump encouraged people of faith to unite for the common good. “We have to put our country first, making America stronger and greater and more exceptional than ever before, and we have to make religion a much more important factor now,” he said.”
