UK, France, and Ukraine to Collaborate on Ceasefire Plan to Present to US
British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced on Sunday that the UK, France, and Ukraine will collaborate on a ceasefire plan to present to the United States.
This development comes after a tense confrontation between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump at the White House on Friday.
Starmer revealed that he had engaged in telephone diplomacy with Zelenskyy, Trump, and French President Emmanuel Macron following the incident. He expressed his commitment to being a diplomatic bridge between Europe and the US, aiming to restore peace talks.
The UK Prime Minister emphasized that the proposed ceasefire plan would require three essential components: a strong Ukraine capable of fighting back, European security guarantees, and a US backstop. He reiterated that US backing would be crucial in deterring Russia from breaking the conditions of a ceasefire.
Starmer is set to host 18 leaders from Europe and Canada in London on Sunday for talks on Ukraine and bolstering European defense. The summit has taken on greater importance in defending Ukraine and shoring up the continent’s defenses.
European leaders have rallied around Zelenskyy following the confrontation, with Starmer adopting a more cautious approach. He has spoken with both Zelenskyy and Trump, insisting that the relationship between the US and the UK remains strong.
Security guarantees are expected to be a key discussion point during Sunday’s summit, with Starmer emphasizing their importance in preventing Putin from taking advantage of any opportunity to restart the conflict.
