US President Donald Trump has stirred international debate after reposting a message on his Truth Social platform suggesting that Ukraine should cede some of its territory to Russia in order to bring an end to the war.
The post stated: “Ukraine must be willing to lose some territory to Russia; otherwise, the longer the war goes on, they will keep losing even more land!!”
This statement arrives just before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s scheduled White House meeting with Trump, where both leaders are expected to discuss potential proposals for ending the war.
Trump’s position has reignited concerns among U.S. allies about his long-term support for Ukraine, particularly as speculation grows that he may halt billions of dollars in American military aid.
Such a move would block critical supplies like radars, armored vehicles, ammunition, and missiles that Ukraine heavily depends on.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the importance of compromise in any peace negotiation, explaining, “You can’t have a peace deal between two warring factions unless both sides agree to give up something.
Otherwise, if one side gets everything they want, that’s not a peace deal. It’s called surrender.” However, Rubio was clear that decisions over territorial concessions ultimately rest with Ukraine itself, stating: “It’s their territory. It’s their country.”
Meanwhile, European leaders including French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte are preparing to meet in Washington.
The gathering is aimed at coordinating Western strategy, reaffirming NATO unity, and assessing the potential consequences of Trump’s evolving position on the conflict.
