US Issues Security Alert for Citizens in Nigeria Amid Rising Iran Tensions

By Achile Danjuma

The United States has issued a security alert for its citizens in Nigeria, urging them to exercise heightened vigilance in the wake of escalating military hostilities between the US and Iran.

In an advisory released on Monday, the US government warned American nationals abroad to remain alert to the evolving security situation. “Following the launch of US combat operations in Iran, Americans worldwide—and especially those in the Middle East—should follow the guidance in the latest security alerts issued by the nearest US embassy or consulate,” the statement read.

The advisory noted that citizens may face travel disruptions due to the potential for sudden airspace closures linked to the ongoing crisis. The US Department of State has advised Americans globally to exercise increased caution.

The department also strongly encouraged citizens to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive real-time security updates. Additionally, it directed them to follow the ‘U.S. Department of State Security Updates for US Citizens’ WhatsApp channel for further information.

The security warning comes amid reports of significant developments in the conflict. According to Iranian state and local media, the country’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in airstrikes reportedly carried out by the United States and Israel. Several other high-ranking Iranian officials are also believed to have died in the attacks.

In response, Iran has reportedly launched a series of missiles at US bases in Gulf nations, including Saudi Arabia. Iranian leaders have vowed to retaliate forcefully for the death of the Supreme Leader and other officials.

US President Donald Trump, speaking during a live broadcast on Saturday as the operations were underway, stated his determination to eliminate members of the Iranian regime. He also called on Iranian citizens to take control of their government once the military operations were concluded.
