US, UK Express ‘Deep Concern’ Over China’s Large-Scale Military Drills Around Taiwan

China’s recent military exercises around Taiwan have sparked deep concern from the US and UK governments.

The large-scale drills, which involved the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and included simulated blockades, missile launches, and amphibious landings, were conducted in response to Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te’s inauguration and National Day speech.

“The United States is deeply concerned over the People’s Liberation Army joint military drills in the Taiwan Strait and around Taiwan,” said US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller. The exercises, which have become increasingly frequent and sophisticated, demonstrate China’s growing assertiveness in the region.

China’s military drills around Taiwan are part of a broader strategy of intimidation and conflict preparedness. The exercises have involved live-fire drills simulating amphibious landings and blockades, air and naval maneuvers, joint operations with multiple branches of the military, missile tests demonstrating China’s capabilities and reach, and cyber warfare showcasing China’s modern warfare tactics.

The exercises have raised concerns about regional stability and the potential for conflict. “China’s military drills exhibit a clear trend of being ‘frequent, intense, large-scale and multi-domain’ in nature,” according to analysts. The drills are seen as a response to perceived provocations, such as US Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan in 2022.

China’s military modernization efforts have been underway for years, with significant investments in technology and equipment. The PLA has become a formidable force, with capabilities rivaling those of the US. “China’s armed forces are comparable to America’s in quality and quantity,” notes Oriana Skylar Mastro, a China expert.

The implications of China’s military exercises around Taiwan are far-reaching, with potential consequences for regional stability and global security. As tensions continue to escalate, the international community remains watchful, urging restraint and diplomacy to resolve the situation.
