Francis has faced respiratory issues since his youth, when part of his lung was removed due to an infection.
He has been hospitalized multiple times since becoming Pope in 2013, including for pneumonia in 2023 and abdominal surgery in previous years.
His latest hospital stay followed a busy morning of meetings, where he reportedly had difficulty speaking.
