The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) FCT Wing and the National Union of Local Government Employees of Nigeria (NULGE) FCT Chapter have directed their members to resume strike action indefinitely, starting Thursday, February 13, 2025.
According to Com. Abdullahi Moh’d Shafa, NUT-FCT State Chairman, and Com. Ibrahim Abullaihi Kabi, NULGE President, FCT Chapter, the decision to resume the strike was due to the failure of the Area Council Chairmen to implement the new national minimum wage of N70,000, as agreed upon in December 2024.
Despite the implementation of the new wage for all workers in the FCT, except Area Council Staff and Primary School Teachers, the Council Chairmen have reneged on their agreement, leaving the teachers and local government employees with no choice but to resume their strike action.
The unions are also demanding the implementation of other outstanding benefits, including the 40% Peculiar allowance, 25% and 35% salary increase, and the N35,000 Wage Award.
“We have been patient and have given the Council Chairmen enough time to fulfill their promises, but unfortunately, they have failed us,” said Com. Shafa. “We are left with no choice but to resume our strike action to demand for our rights.”
The strike action is expected to affect primary schools and local government services in the FCT. The unions have urged their members to remain united and committed to the cause, saying “a people united, can never be defeated.”
