The recent confrontation between Minister Wike and Navy Officer Yerima has exposed a troubling reality about leadership in the country. What should have been a display of respect and decorum turned into a public sensation, embarrassing not just a political party, but the nation itself.
The APC has long struggled with a damaged image, yet Wike’s behavior added further stain. By publicly insulting a Navy officer and calling him a fool, he not only humiliated an individual but disrespected the military an institution that stands for discipline, courage, and service. While many police officers have abandoned these principles, Yerima’s calm and courageous response reaffirmed the honor that the uniform represents.
The irony is painful. Wike, entrusted to uphold the dignity of his office and the country, instead contributed to its disgrace. His actions echo the criticisms of global observers, including Donald Trump’s recent-controversial remark describing Nigeria as a “disgraceful country.”
Yerima’s conduct reminded Nigerians that integrity and discipline still exist, even when those in power fail. The public’s unified rejection of Wike’s arrogance including the criticism of those defending him demonstrates that Nigerians are more united than ever in demanding accountability.
This incident is a lesson that leadership without humility or respect destroys both reputation and trust. But the courage and integrity displayed by Yerima restore faith in the ideals of service. For a nation weary of arrogance, his example is a reminder that honor can still prevail.
