A large fire broke out on Arthur’s Seat, the dormant volcano that overlooks Edinburgh, on Sunday, August 10, 2025.
The first emergency calls came in at 4:05 p.m. local time, and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service reported that a wide stretch of shrubland was burning.
Several hours later, crews were still working to contain the flames. No injuries were reported.
Authorities have not disclosed what started the blaze. Video shared online showed heavy smoke drifting across the city skyline.
Local representatives urged people nearby to stay safe, while police asked pedestrians and drivers to avoid the area.
Arthur’s Seat rises 251 meters above sea level in Holyrood Park, offering sweeping views of the capital.
The site is home to a 2,000-year-old hill fort and the remains of St Anthony’s Chapel from the 15th century. It is located close to the Scottish Parliament and the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
Similar fires have been tackled on the hill in recent years, including in 2022, 2020, and 2019.
This year, Scotland has experienced its driest start since 1964, with water companies in May urging residents toconserve supplies.
