The First Lady of Yobe State, Hajiya Hafsat Buni, has launched an initiative to distribute essential food items to 2,000 vulnerable women across the state to support them during the holy month of Ramadan.
Hajiya Buni, who also serves as the State Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), announced the programme on Tuesday. She stated that the gesture is designed to provide relief to underprivileged women across all 17 Local Government Areas of the state during the fasting period.
Represented at the event by the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Hajiya Mairo Amshi, the First Lady reiterated the commitment of the RHI to grassroots empowerment. “The Renewed Hope Initiative will continue to empower women, strengthen community resilience, and support vulnerable populations across the state,” she said.
Hajiya Buni emphasised that such interventions are critical in addressing food insecurity and enhancing the welfare of women in Yobe communities. She detailed that the Ramadan packages contained staple food items, including rice, spaghetti, and cooking oil, intended to ease the economic burden on widows and other vulnerable women during Ramadan.
She further explained that the programme’s broader goal extends beyond immediate food support. “It is aimed at restoring hope and encouraging empowerment among the women who need it most,” she added.
Also speaking at the distribution, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hajiya Yajalo Badama, commended the initiative, stating it aligns with the people-focused vision of Governor Mai Mala Buni. She noted that the Governor has consistently encouraged government officials and public office holders to extend support and relief to the less privileged across the state.
Hajiya Badama highlighted that the effort embodies the values of compassion and service synonymous with Ramadan, while also reflecting the administration’s developmental priorities. “This initiative underscores the administration’s commitment to ensuring that the dividends of democracy reach every community, particularly the most vulnerable, so that no one is left behind,” she stated.
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is a period observed by Muslims worldwide through fasting from dawn to sunset, increased prayer, and acts of charity.
