Yusuf Buhari, son of Nigeria’s late former President Muhammadu Buhari, has indicated his intention to run for the House of Representatives seat representing the Sandamu/Daura/Mai’Adua federal constituency in Katsina State. He is expected to seek the ticket of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to local stakeholders, Yusuf’s decision follows extensive consultations and is framed as a response to persistent calls from party members and constituents in the late president’s political stronghold. Muhammadu Buhari, who died in 2025, hailed from Daura and maintained significant political influence across the region.
During a recent meeting of APC stakeholders in Sandamu Local Government Area, Yusuf was endorsed as the party’s preferred candidate, with supporters citing his “capacity and acceptance” among the party faithful. However, the endorsement has deepened divisions within the local APC chapter. Some leaders from Daura and surrounding areas have rejected the move, describing it as an imposition.
The federal constituency holds deep symbolic importance as the heart of the Buhari political legacy. Yusuf’s potential entry into electoral politics comes at a time when the APC is grappling with internal power struggles and succession battles in Katsina and other northern states.
Proponents of his candidacy argue that it could help consolidate party unity and leverage the Buhari name to secure victory. Critics, however, warn against the rise of political dynasties and question the implications for democratic representation in Nigeria.
As of now, neither Yusuf Buhari nor the national leadership of the APC has issued an official statement confirming his formal declaration. Local party sources indicate that further consultations are ongoing amid the growing rift over the endorsement.
The development adds to mounting speculation that family members of former leaders are positioning themselves for office as Nigeria approaches another major election cycle.
