After two hours of play time, Paraguay overcame four-time world champions Germany on penalties to advance to the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Julio Enciso and Kai Havertz scored for Paraguay and Germany, respectively, before the match went to extra time.
There was drama when VAR stepped in over a goal scored by the German team, forcing the referee to disallow it, adjudging that a German defender, Waldemar Anton, prevented Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill from challenging for the ball.
The match was eventually decided on a penalty shootout, which ended 4-3 in favour of Paraguay.
Paraguay have now advanced to their second-ever knockout match, billed for Saturday in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Paraguay will face the winner of Tuesday’s round-of-32 tie between France and Sweden in New Jersey for a place in the quarter-finals.
