Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has urged political leaders, party members and youths to embrace issue-based engagement instead of violence during electoral cycles.
Mr Aiyedatiwa made the appeal on Thursday at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Arcade in Akure, the state capital, during the celebration of Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary.
The governor noted that political differences are natural in a democracy but should not undermine the bonds that unite Nigerians as families, neighbours and citizens.
“As the country approaches another electoral cycle, Nigerians should use the independence anniversary to renew their faith in the country and contribute to building a nation that future generations will be proud of.
“Nigeria’s independence, achieved in 1960, was secured by a generation that believed people of different languages, traditions and faiths could share a common destiny.
“Independence, therefore, is more than the memory of a date; it is a continuing responsibility to the past, the present and the future. The Nigeria we desire will not be built by government alone, but by the collective efforts of its citizens,” he said.
The governor also called for renewed commitment to peace, unity, patriotism, and responsible citizenship, urging Nigerians to protect the shared values that have sustained the country through different challenges.
Mr Aiyedatiwa also appreciated the federal government under President Bola Tinubu for its continued support and partnership with the state.
He acknowledged federal efforts to strengthen the economy, infrastructure, and investment environment, particularly projects like the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road, the proposed Deep-Sea Port, and other initiatives with potential economic benefits for Ondo State.
“We look forward to deeper collaboration in the interest of our people and the continued development of Nigeria,” he said.
Earlier, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Taiwo Fasoranti, called for renewed hope and a stronger sense of collective responsibility among Nigerians to build a greater country.
Mr Fasoranti said Nigeria’s journey since independence had witnessed “seasons of promise and difficulty, moments of triumph and trial”, but the country had continued to demonstrate resilience.
The SSG urged residents to support the state government’s development vision, anchored on the present government’s agenda, and expressed optimism about greater achievements ahead.
