The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has insisted it will present candidates in the 2027 general elections, dismissing as “mischievous” any suggestion to the contrary. But the denial comes against a backdrop of deep internal crisis, following revelations that Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso are planning to defect from the ADC to a new party — accusing former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of luring them into the ADC only to advance his own presidential ambition.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said: “We remain focused on our mission to rescue Nigeria from the failure of the APC-led government… The ADC will present candidates in the 2027 elections. Not just candidates, but credible, competent, and nationally acceptable candidates.”
The statement was released shortly after Buba Galadima, a close ally of Kwankwaso, disclosed that Obi and Kwankwaso would defect from the ADC to a new political party as early as Monday next week. Galadima cited lingering court cases bedeviling the ADC due to factional leadership disputes as one of the reasons for the planned defection.
