Prominent Kogi businessman and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Senatorial candidate for Kogi East, in the 2023 election, Dr. Victor Alewo Adoji, has delivered a thought-provoking Christmas message titled “Merry Christmas in a Season Without Seasoning.” In his statement, Adoji reflects on the complexities of celebrating Christmas in Nigeria’s current economic and social climate, while also offering a hopeful vision for the future.
Adoji acknowledges the “gusts” of preparation and desire surrounding Christmas, but emphasizes the importance of moving beyond the commercial aspects of the holiday. He suggests that “Koinonia,” defined as fellowship, community, and sharing, should be the true focus of the season. He proposes that celebrating within communities, regardless of affiliation, and offering both tangible and intangible gifts would be a more meaningful way to mark the birth of Christ.
However, Adoji doesn’t shy away from addressing the harsh realities facing Nigerians. He describes the 2023 Christmas as a “season without seasoning” due to the prevailing economic downturn and widespread despondency. He highlights the need for empathetic leadership and informed followership as Nigeria navigates these challenges.
“As 2024 beckons, one can only hope that the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ bequeathes us with a few things: empathetic leadership, informed followership and the appurtenances to begin the transition of Nigeria from a country to a Nation,” Adoji states.
Adoji’s Christmas message has resonated with many in Kogi East, sparking discussions about the true meaning of the holiday and the role of leadership in addressing Nigeria’s problems. His call for empathy, informed participation, and national unity provides a hopeful lens through which to view the upcoming year.
