The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has revealed that he is considering life beyond the speakership, hinting that a governorship ambition may be on the horizon.
Obasa, who has previously served as a councillor and is currently Speaker, recalled that in an interview seven years ago, he mentioned that his next step could be either the Senate or the governorship. However, he clarified that the statement was not definitive.
He explained that while every politician has personal ambitions, progression in politics is ultimately determined by party structures and leadership.
“Now that we are talking about politics, you have to be a member of a political party, and if you are a member, you must believe in the leadership of that party,” Obasa said.
According to him, political advancement is not solely based on individual desires but on consultations and decisions taken collectively by party leaders.
“So, you may aspire to become something, but if you respect the party and the way it is managed, you will understand that the leaders sit together and decide who goes next. It’s all about consultation and engagement with party leaders,” he added.
- Although Obasa did not directly declare his governorship ambition, he did not deny it either. When asked if he would consider extending his stay in the Lagos Assembly for another term, he simply responded, “not really.”
