Cross River State governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has commended former Minister of Culture and Tourism, High Chief Edem Duke, for his enduring contributions to national development as he celebrates his 70th birthday.
In a goodwill message to mark the occasion, the governor described Duke as an outstanding son of Cross River State whose career in public service has significantly shaped Nigeria’s cultural and tourism sectors. The message, issued by the Chief Press Secretary and Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Linus Obogo, praised Duke’s dedication, intellect and consistent commitment to excellence.
Governor Otu noted that Duke’s years in government were defined by purposeful leadership and innovative thinking, which helped strengthen national pride and project Nigeria’s cultural heritage to the global stage. He said the former minister brought clarity and vision to the culture and tourism portfolio, positioning it as a tool for unity, economic advancement and international engagement.
According to the governor, Duke’s understanding of culture went beyond tradition, as he leveraged it to promote national cohesion and sustainable development. He added that Duke’s efforts contributed to elevating Cross River State’s profile as a leading tourism destination in the country.
Describing him as a patriot, Otu said Duke’s service to Nigeria was guided by the national interest and a passion for innovation, noting that his commitment was evident in every role he played, both in and out of government.
The governor further observed that even after leaving public office, Duke has remained a respected voice and mentor, offering guidance and inspiration to younger generations through his ideas and counsel. He said Duke’s life story reflects valuable lessons in leadership, resilience and selfless service.
Otu described the 70th birthday celebration as a recognition of impact rather than age, stressing that Duke’s experience and wisdom continue to be of great value to Cross River State and the nation.
He expressed confidence that the elder statesman would continue to make meaningful contributions to cultural development and national discourse in the years ahead. The governor concluded by wishing Duke continued strength, fulfilment and relevance, as family, friends and admirers celebrate a life dedicated to culture, country and service to humanity.
