In a speech to formally launch the distribution of the materials to individuals and communities, the director general of NEMA, Zubaida Umar, said that the items were meant to bring succour to the victims.

Ms Umar said the gesture was part of the government’s response to the floods that affected the residents. She said that the provision of food and non-food items to victims was another demonstration of concern and President Bola Tinubu’s sensitivity to the plight of Nigerians.

She advised the victims to put the items to good use, saying that they were expected to cushion the effect of the flood on them.

Sadiq Abass, representing Jalingo, Zing, Yorro federal constituency, commended Mr Tinubu for the quick intervention in the plight of his constituents.

Mr Abass said that the intervention was part of the vision of the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr Tinubu’s administration.

He appealed to the beneficiaries not to see the intervention as compensation but as a demonstration of a response to their plight.

He also described the gesture as a demonstration of the government’s humanitarian services and welfare for the people. He expressed his determination to continue to provide “ideal representation” for the people.

He advised the beneficiaries not to sell the items but to use them as support for their families.

One of the beneficiaries, David Musa, thanked the federal government for the intervention.

Mr Musa also commended Abass for ensuring that they received the relief materials. He said that the items would go a long way in reducing their hardship during the Yuletide celebrations.

Another beneficiary, Mariam Isa, commended both the government and Mr Abbas for the relief materials. Ms Isa assured that she would not sell her items but would utilise them to support her family.

The items included bags of rice, maize, salt, cartons of seasonings, tomato paste, vegetable oil, blankets, and clothes, amongst others.
